Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)

The practice of structuring content and technical signals so AI answer engines can find, understand, and cite your brand.

Definition

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the discipline of optimizing a brand's web presence for AI-powered answer engines — tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Google's AI Overviews — rather than (or in addition to) traditional search result pages. It combines technical readiness (crawler access, structured data, canonicals), content strategy (answer-ready pages), and authority building (citation footprint) into a coherent program.

Why it matters for AI visibility

As more buyer journeys begin with an AI assistant rather than a search results page, brands that are not optimized for answer engines risk being invisible at the moment a buyer is forming a shortlist. AEO is the structured response to that risk.
